How do I find my PC’s MAC address?

The MAC (Media Access Control) address allows us to identify your PC on the University network – this information is often required by Service Desk staff in order to deal with networking issues. It is also known as the hardware or physical address. Instructions on how to find the MAC address are given below.

Via a wired network connection (i.e. network socket in your office)

Via Wireless Connection

  • click on Start then Run… type cmd in the box
  • The Command Prompt window will open.
  • At the prompt, type ipconfig /all then press the Enter key
  • Under the heading Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, the 12-digit MAC address is listed as Physical Address; so, in the example below, the MAC address is 00-07-E9-8F-53-04.

Windows Vista

  • From the Start menu, go to All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
  • The Command Prompt window will open.
  • At the prompt, type in ipconfig /all then press the Enter key
  • Under the heading Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, the 12-digit MAC address is listed as Physical Address.

  • The Command Prompt window will open.
  • At the prompt, type in ipconfig then press the Enter key.
  • Under the heading Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection, the 12-digit MAC address is listed as IPv4 Address.

Wireless Connection

While connected to the wireless network:

  • Click on Start then Run… type cmd in the box
  • The Command Prompt window will open.
  • At the prompt, type ipconfig /all then press the Enter key
  • Under the heading Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection, the 12-digit MAC address is listed as Physical Address; so, in the example below, the MAC address is 00-13-CE-CF-90-00.
